An Outing Without Breaking the Bank- Twelve Ways

Apple iTunes

We are in recession and many of us are strapped for cash.  Being financially challenged shouldn’t mean missing out on fun things to do in your area.  By learning to think outside the box, you’ll begin to see that there are other ways of enjoying yourself with loved ones.

  1. Any colleges in your area?  Many of your local colleges and universities have performing arts programs that put on events for the public for free!
  2. Is your city known for having seasonal festivals? Great!  Your local festivals can offer a fun-filled and cultural event for the family for the cheap.
  3. Drive-ins?  Yes, they are still around in some areas and are way more affordable than catching an evening movie at a traditional theatre.
  4. Nature trails.  Check out your local Chamber of Commerce, they have tons of flyers available on different tourist attractions in your local area.
  5. Miniature golf.  It’s one of the few leisure things left today that hasn’t become more expensive to enjoy.  Most places offer great deals for a couple of rounds for under $20.
  6. Skating.  There’s probably a skating rink in your area that you have probably forgotten about.  Many of them have a discount night where children can skate at a reduced rate.
  7. Bookstores and lattes.  Many of us glide past that café every time we enter it in search of a book.  Instead of buying the book, why not select a book and read in the café.  Get a couple of lattes and relax with your significant other.
  8. Pay attention foodies!  There are restaurants in your area that are struggling for business.  Many of them offer great deals during the slowest days of the week, so take advantage of them.
  9. Picnics and sandwiches.  Imagine that … an afternoon of dialog without electronics.  In this day and age, conversation is a delicacy.  Grab a couple of subs and dine in your local park.
  10. Charades anyone?  Game night with the family or a few friends is an affordable way to have a good time.  Order a pizza and spend time with the family in the privacy of your home.
  11. Welcome to the club.  There’s a site online called “Meetup.”  There are always craft and language clubs that hold regular and informal meetings.  The craft and language clubs are extremely affordable, so you won’t have to break the bank to attend.
  12. Go bowling.  Like skating and miniature golf, the price of bowling is still a very affordable way the family can get together without breaking the bank.

Don’t let your personal finances keep you from enjoying life.  Get out there and get back to living.  Broaden your definition of “fun” and rediscover the world around you.
